Vulture is home to the famous Aglianico del Vulture red wine, certified DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) in 1971 and DOCG (Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin) in 2011. We are in Basilicata, a small region in southern Italy, washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea in the south-west and the Ionian Sea in the south-east.

Vulture is an area that extends in the northern part of the region close behind Mount Vulture, a dormant volcano originated in the Pleistocene era (800,000 to 130,000 years ago). Although the origin of the soil is volcanic, there are differences going from area to area and from town to town, part of the product specification.

Differences due to the various eruption eras of the volcano as a result of chemical magmatic processes in the volcanic rock. Different mouths or calderas were created such as those now filled with water called Laghi di Monticchio.

According to geologists, the history of Vulture is divided into a stratified succession of products and their petrographic characters in different periods and litho-stratigraphic units (Unità di Fara d’Olivo, Masseria Boccaglie, Rionero-Barile, Vulture-San Michele, Masseria Lopes and Laghi di Monticchio).
